RHOME BUDGET APPROVED – At its meeting Thursday, the Rhome City Council approved an $1,834,578 budget for the 2014-2015 fiscal year. It will be funded by a $0.5833 tax rate, also approved at Thursday’s meeting. Although the overall budget has a surplus of $1,687.55, it features a deficit of $327,423.29 in the police department fund.

EMPTY THE SHELTER – The Wise County Animal Shelter will host “Empty the Shelter Day,” Saturday. The event is designed to encourage pet adoption by sponsoring all costs. Adoption fees are covered by a group of local women deemed the “Shelter Buddies” who support the shelter year-round. Staff and volunteers will be present at the shelter, located on Farm Road 51 South, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. and from 2-5 p.m. There will also be an off-site adoption event at Tractor Supply from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

SAFETY FEST – Wise Regional Health System will host Wise Family Safety Fest 9-11 a.m. Saturday at the hospital. The free event includes a bicycle obstacle course; backpack safety; fire truck, Sheriff’s Office vehicles and helicopter tours; CPR and AED demonstrations; texting and driving simulator; fire safety education trailer; a water slide; swimming skill evaluations; and life-saving demonstrations. SPORTS REGISTRATION – The Bridgeport Youth Association will hold registration for fall soccer and flag football 9 a.m.-noon at the Community Center on Lawdwin Avenue. Ages for soccer are 3-14 and flag football is kindergarten through third grade. Visit www.bridgeportyouthassoc.com.

DECATUR GOES 2-1 AT TOURNEY – The Decatur Lady Eagles beat Round Rock McNeil 25-20, 25-22 and then toppled Bellaire 23-25, 25-18, 25-16 at the Adidas Texas Volleyball Invitational. Decatur lost to 6A’s fourth-ranked Houston Clear Falls 25-22, 25-15. Decatur played Rouse in a crossover match for a chance to make the gold bracket of the event at 8 a.m. today. The Northwest Lady Texans fell to San Antonio Johnson 25-9, 25-13 and Allen 25-14, 25-22. The Lady Texans beat Clements 25-20, 27-25.

NOLAN HOLDS OFF BOYD – After losing two starters in the middle of the volleyball match Thursday, the Boyd Lady Yellowjackets tried to mount a rally but fell short. Nolan held off Boyd 25-15, 25-20, 25-23. Baylie Harris, Kayleigh Pappajohn and Morgan Abbott put down five kills each. Harris also handed out 13 assists. Britney Howard made 18 digs.

FOOTBALL SCRIMMAGES – The Decatur Eagles football team will line up against an opponent for the first time at 7 tonight with a scrimmage against Kennedale. The Eagles will be one of many Wise County schools in action. Boyd will scrimmage Howe at 7 at home. Chico will head to Millsap. Paradise is at Lindsay at 6 p.m. Bridgeport will scrimmage Bowie at home at 9 a.m. Saturday. Alvord will host Era at 6 p.m.

VOLLEYBALL ACTION – The Decatur Lady Eagles and Northwest Lady Texans continue play at the Adidas Texas Volleyball Invite today. Boyd and Bridgeport will head to Burkburnett. Chico will host Ponder at 5 p.m.

SOCIETY MEETING – The Wise County Fossil, Rock and Mineral Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church’s Wesley Center. The program will be given by Steve and Mary Hilliard on “How to host a Rock and Mineral Show.” Steve and Mary Hilliard are members of the Fort Worth Gem and Mineral Society and have hosted shows. HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEETING – The Bridgeport Historical Society meets Monday at Weatherford College Wise County. Lunch will be served at 11:30, and Virginia Wood will give a program on early Bridgeport pioneer James. A. Proctor.

CLAY SHOOT – The Wise Regional Health Foundation Clay Shoot is Friday, Aug. 22, at Fossil Pointe Sporting Grounds near Slidell. Registration begins at 8 a.m., and the shoot starts at 9 a.m. Cost is $100 a person or $500 per team. Lunch is provided, and there will be raffle prizes and awards. GIRLS SOFTBALL – Decatur Girls Fall Softball signups run through Aug. 31. The league is for all Wise County girls ages 7-14 as of Jan. 1, 2014. Signups will take place at the concession stand 1-3 p.m. Sunday at Renshaw Park. FREE HAIRCUTS AND SCHOOL SUPPLIES – For the fifth year, The Hair Shop in Bridgeport is giving away haircuts and backpacks with school supplies 8 a.m.-1 p.m. tomorrow at Pleasant View Baptist Church in Bridgeport. Call 940-683-2484.

POOL PARTY – Wise County Girl Scouts will hold a signup pool party 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the Bridgeport City Pool.

FUNERALS – Service for Gloria J. Hughes Hall, 82, of Bowie is pending at Hawkins Funeral Home in Bridgeport.

FUNERAL for Allen “Wayne” Watts, 80, of Paradise is 10 a.m. Saturday at Grace Baptist Church with burial at 2 p.m. Saturday at Highland Cemetery in Iowa Park. Family visitation is 6-8 tonight at Coker-Hawkins Funeral Home in Decatur.

FUNERAL for Godfrey W. Pegues, 95, of Newark is 10 a.m. Saturday at Northwest Church of Christ in Fort Worth with burial at Dido Cemetery. Family visitation is 9 a.m. Saturday at the church. Calvario Funeral Home in Fort Worth is handling arrangements.
