COMMISSIONERS CONSIDER PROPERTY TAX RATE – At a special commissioners meeting Thursday Wise County Tax Assessor-Collector Monte Shaw presented the 2014 property tax rates, information that is used to set the new tax rate and fund the budget for fiscal year 2015. The current rate is 37.89 cents per $100 valuation, and Shaw said the effective rate is 36.13 cents per $100 valuation – a difference of almost 2 cents. The effective rate, with this year’s property values, would raise the same amount of tax dollars as last year, but that may not be enough to balance next year’s budget. County Judge Glenn Hughes is recommending a budget based on the current rate due mainly to a large increase in the county’s insurance rates. Commissioners may propose a tax rate at their next regular meeting Aug. 11. Read more in the weekend Wise County Messenger on newsstands tomorrow.
