Fire destroys Balsora-area home

A grass fire caught a home on fire in far west Wise County Saturday evening. A passerby saw the home on fire and alerted the homeowner, Arthur “Curly” Talmage, 91, who was in a workshop on the property at 329 Private Road 3706 west of Balsora. Wise County Fire Marshal Chuck Beard said Talmage had been burning trash in a burn barrel earlier in the day, and a small grass fire had started. Talmage put the fire out, but it apparently rekindled about an hour later before spreading to the one-story, wood-frame home. He was not injured. The fire was reported just before 5 p.m. Boonsville/Balsora, Cottondale, Bridgeport, Runaway Bay, Lake Bridgeport and Jack County Rural fire departments responded along with Wise County EMS. Beard said the home will be a total loss.
