Over 11 innings Friday against District 4-5A leader Richland, Northwest’s Catherine Totty kept delivering one high-leverage pitch after another.
“A lot of adrenaline,” Totty said. “The excitement and knowing we could win the game kept me going.”
That win was finally delivered in the bottom of the 11th when Sydnee Hinkle’s walk-off infield single brought home Tuesday DerMargosian. Northwest topped Richland 2-1 at Lady Texan Field.
“Joy. Relief,” Totty said about the winning run. “This is how I know we can play.”
The Northwest victory knocked Richland from a share of first place with their first district setback. It also kept the Lady Texans (12-9) in the hunt for the league title at 4-2.
“It’s a huge win,” said Northwest coach Tanya Morrow. “We joked around that we beat Denton Guyer when they were undefeated. Richland was undefeated in district. We have that mentality against undefeated teams that we are not scared and come out strong. No one can beat us with that mental toughness.”
Totty displayed it throughout the game against Richland’s potent lineup, scattering 10 hits and striking out seven. She did not give up a walk.
“Cat pitched an incredible game,” Morrow said. “Everything was working. We went away from a few pitches for a few innings and then went right back to them.
“She pitched a great game, and we played excellent defense behind her.”
Totty was toughest with runners on base. Richland went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position. The lone run that tied the game at 1 scored on a groundout by Destiny Deaton in the fourth.
Northwest grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning with DerMargosian reaching on an error and scoring on a single by Hinkle.
After Richland tied the game in the fourth, it stayed knotted until the bottom of the 11th. DerMargosian led off the frame, hitting the ball to Richland first baseman Bailey Darracq, who bobbled it. Running hard down the line, DerMargosian slid safely around a tag.
“She’s a ballplayer. She does what comes natural, and it works,” Morrow said about the play.
Totty then put down a sacrifice bunt to move DerMargosian to second. Brianna Barnhill’s fly ball to center put DerMargosian at third with two out.
Hinkle then crushed the ball to third to score the run and set off the celebration.
“The girls played awesome,” Morrow said. “Getting the bunt down, the sac fly and executing. We worked in practice yesterday on scoring the runner with two outs. The girls did well yesterday and did even better today.”
