Cameron Schulte knows only one speed on the football field – and sometimes it became a little too much during the Boyd Yellowjackets’ practices.
“He’s a tough-nosed kid that plays hard every down,” said coach Brandon Hopkins. “Sometimes it was too hard in practice. We’d have to ask him to bring it down to keep someone from getting hurt.”
But that approach earned the Boyd senior a chance to continue his football career next year at Howard Payne University in Brownwood. Schulte signed with the NCAA Division III school this week.
“I’m going to college because I go hard every play,” Schulte said. “You’ve got to push your teammates.”
Schulte started two seasons at outside linebacker for the Yellowjackets. He made 77 tackles this past year to earn 9-2A and All-Wise honors.
“He’s one of the better linebackers to come through here lately,” Hopkins said. “He’s a good tackler. He’s real aggressive and is a strong kid.”
At Boyd, Schulte played outside linebacker in the Yellowjackets’ 4-3. Howard Payne plays a 3-4.
“I’ll probably be playing an inside linebacker there,” he said. “I may not play the first couple of years. I’ve got to come in and pay my dues.”
Schulte said he picked Howard Payne because of its location and its graduate assistant program.
“It’s far enough away without being too far,” he said. “I liked the school. It’s got a good graduate assistant program. I want to be a coach in high school after college.”
