Samples makes 9-3A team; 7 Eagles, 4 Bulls earn honors

Bridgeport senior Alex Samples pitched the Bulls into the postseason as the veteran leader of the team.

Samples allowed only four earned runs in 55 innings on 52 hits. At the plate, he batted .296 with 15 RBIs and a homer.

Samples’ efforts landed him on the District 9-3A first team. He was one of four Bulls to earn league honors.

Seven Decatur players earned district selections.

District champion Sanger dominated the superlative awards. Ted Wisdom earned the league MVP. Anthony Escobedo garnered Offensive MVP. T.J. Self was the best newcomer. Sanger hurler Ross Scott shared the pitching award with Krum’s Colton Lucas.

Gainesville’s Tag Sparks grabbed Defensive MVP.

Decatur pitcher Clayton Egle, catcher Michael Hicks, first baseman Nick Trachta, shortstop Mason Baur, outfielders Cain Lowe and Austin Givens made the first team.

Egle went 4-5 on the mound with a 2.62 ERA in 53.1 innings with 36 strikeouts. He hit .219 with 12 RBIs. Trachta batted .329 with a homer and 13 RBIs. Hicks sported a .222 average. Baur hit .293 with 15 RBIs and went 5-3 with a 1.70 ERA pitching. Lowe batted .271 with eight RBIs and a team-high 17 stolen bases. Givens hit .317 with 11 RBIs and a homer.

Bridgeport outfielder Eric Delgadillo joined the first team after hitting .207 with four RBIs. He hit .263 during district play.

Decatur’s Christian Carrillo, A.J. Johnson and Drew Edwards made the second team. Carrillo batted .256 with seven RBI. Johnson had a .256 average and drove in eight runs. Edwards hit .301 and knocked in 12 runs.

Bridgeport’s Jared Huff and Daniel Garcia made the second team. Huff batted .312 with seven RBIs. Garcia finished the year with a .304 average and nine RBIs.

Decatur’s Josh Jones and Bridgeport’s Dalton Hudson received honorable mention.
