But the Bridgeport sophomore also avoided any big scores – which was good enough to get her the Class 3A Region II silver medal and a trip to the University Interscholastic League’s 3A state championships.

“I just played my game and made a lot of pars,” Read said.

Read shot rounds of 84 and 79 to finish with a 163. Melissa’s Brooke Nolte won the tournament with a 157.

Read is happy to get a second chance to play at state. She advanced last year with the Bridgeport team. She was also the regional runner-up last year.

The state tournament will be April 28-29 at the Hyatt Lost Pines Golf Resort in Bastrop.

“It’s great going both years. I’m excited and ready to play,” Read said. “I haven’t played [Lost Pines]. I’m looking forward to seeing a new course.”

Read will be joined at state by freshman teammate Brooke Irion, who finished fourth at regionals with a 168 after shooting 86 and 82. Irion moved up to second medalist with Nolte’s Melissa squad winning the tournament and advancing. Gabby Thompson of Atlanta finished third with a 166. Her team also advanced to state, finishing second.

“I’m excited. It was really close,” Irion said.

Irion got her tournament off to a strong start Monday, chipping in the ball for birdie on her first hole. She had two birdies in her first round. She birdied 10 on Tuesday with a 25-foot putt.

“I was doing pretty good until the last three holes,” Irion said. “My nerves got to me at the end.”

She was able to par 18 to keep her two shots clear of fifth place.

Bridgeport finished fourth as a team with a two-day total of 799.

Melissa won with a 712. Atlanta finished second with a 755 and Carrollton Ranchview snagged the third state spot with a 796.

Bridgeport’s Remi Swensson tied for 20th with a 199. She shot 102 in the first round and 97 in the second. Ashli Lennard shot 269 with rounds of 136 and 133.
