Paradise relay stays unbeaten

By Richard Greene | Published Saturday, March 29, 2014

By the time the baton made its way to Mikeala Beck Thursday, her Paradise teammates had given her a lead. The sophomore just lengthened it on her way to winning the 4×100 relay at the Boyd Invitational.

“I don’t like to lose,” Beck said after crossing the finish line.

The quartet of Kendall McCasland, Bailey Sides, Taylor Richards and Beck finished the trip around the Boyd track in a season-best 50.89.

“The heat is draining us but we got our best time,” Beck said. “We had two amazing handoffs and one that was iffy but our third leg made up for it.”

The win kept the relay unbeaten on the season.

“Our coach says there is no reason for us not to get gold every meet,” Beck said. “We’re coming back here in two weeks for district. We’ll try to improve.”

The Paradise quartet of Carressa McCasland, Sides, Richards and Aliyah Read also won the 4×200 in 1:50.24.

“[Our time] was good but our handoffs were bad,” Read said. “We’re doing good but we want to break the school record of 1:45.”

The Lady Panthers could not complete the sweep of the relays as 9-2A rival Alvord – Lauren Hart, Jessica Gillespie, Marissa Schedcik and Savannah Williams – ran a 4:12.05 to edge the Paradise quartet of Sides, Makala Neighbors, Beck and Read, who finished in 4:13.61.

BOYD WINS TWO RELAYS

Boyd sophomore Qualynn Wells surged past Springtown’s anchor leg Thursday to capture the 4×100 at Yellowjacket Stadium.

Wells teamed with Shay Dodson, Xavier Kyle and Jackson Basting to run a 44.3.

“If you can’t win at home, you can’t win anywhere,” Dodson said.

The same Boyd quartet ran 1:33.89 to win the 4×200.

WILLIAMS CAPTURES 800

Alvord’s Savannah Williams, the 2013 Class 2A silver medalist, won the 800 at Boyd Thursday. But Williams wasn’t pleased with her time of 2:31.36 – 10 seconds behind what she ran last May at the state meet.

“I didn’t run it fast enough,” Williams said.

She turned a 66-second first lap and slowed over the final lap.

Martinez runs to victory Boyd’s Marco Martinez captured the gold medal Thursday on his home track in the 3,200.

Martinez ran away from the field to record a 14-second victory. Mineral Wells’ Preston Brooks took second in 10:50.

“It was good. I’m definitely getting back in shape,” Martinez said.

BECK WINS 100

Along with bringing home the gold as the anchor leg on the Paradise sprint relay, Mikeala Beck won the 100 Thursday in 12.83.

She’s pleased with the win, but said it’s not her main goal.

“I’m trying to get my coach’s [Johna Ford] record (2-1),” Beck said. “She’s trying to help me beat her record.”

Beck also took second in the long jump with an effort of 16-1. Peaster’s Sarah Rattan won the event with a 16-7.5.
