The Northwest Lady Texans entered Tuesday’s regular-season finale needing a win and some help to keep their postseason hopes alive.
To secure the fourth playoff spot out of District 4-5A, Northwest needed to beat Keller Central in the finale at home, and for Keller Timber Creek to trip up Fossil Ridge.
“If we win and Timber Creek beats Fossil Ridge, there will be a three-way time for fourth place,” explained Northwest coach Rusty Johnson. “If that happens, Northwest will play Fossil Ridge and the winner will play Timber Creek. The winner of that advances as the fourth seed into the playoffs.”
The Lady Texans (12-14, 4-9) were put in the tight spot after falling to Richland 53-41 Friday.
Richland, the third seed out of the league, opened up a 34-26 halftime lead with a 15-8 run to close the first half. Northwest trimmed the deficit to three, 38-35, going into the fourth quarter. Richland held Northwest at bay with a 15-6 closing spurt.
Alexus Brigham led Northwest with 12 points. Shyann Hooper and Brianna Christensen added six points each.
