A huge week for the Decatur Lady Eagles and their chances of bringing home a District 9-3A title began Tuesday.
The Lady Eagles (18-4) went to Gainesville to take on the fellow 9-3A leaders Lady Leopards. Decatur will play host to Krum, the third team tied for the league lead, on Friday.
“It’s a big week with Gainesville and Krum,” said Decatur coach Billy Garner. “We’ll have to be ready. Tuesday over there will not be easy. Then Friday, we want to defend our home court.”
Decatur held off Gainesville for a 42-41 win Jan. 3. The Lady Eagles then fell to Krum 48-42.
“We thought we had it and then got sloppy and let it go,” said Decatur guard Murphy Graham about the loss to Krum.
Garner added: “They were really physical with us the second half, and it took us out of what we wanted to do offensively. We’ve got to respond better this time.”
Since the loss to Krum, Decatur has won two straight with strong offensive showings. The Lady Eagles put up 58 against Bridgeport and 59 Friday in a win against Sanger.
“We’ve gotten more focused and realized what we need to do as a team,” Graham said.
With only three district games remaining after Tuesday, the Lady Eagles also see the opportunity in front of them to win a district crown.
“As a team we’ve talked about it. We want first. We have the potential to do it,” Graham said.
This week could show it.
