For a second straight week, the Northwest Texans walked off winners thanks to the foot of Chris Hamilton.

The place-kicker’s 27-yard field goal gave the Texans a 31-29 win over Timber Creek last Friday.

“We’re fortunate to have a kicker like Chris Hamilton,” said Northwest coach Bill Poe. “He’s level-headed and confident in what he does. Talking with him before the kick you could see he had all the confidence in the world.”

Hamilton’s boot kept the Texans’ alive in the chase for a playoff spot in the tight District 5-6A. Northwest (4-4, 2-2) will need to find another way to pull out a win Friday when Denton Ryan comes to Northwest ISD Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

“We’re in the playoffs now. If we want to get in the real playoffs, we’ve got to win the next two,” Poe said. “The kids have responded the last two weeks.”

The Texans’ challenge this week will be slowing down Ryan’s Maurice Gordon, who is averaging nearly six yards per carry. He has 988 yards on 167 carries.

“It’ll be a challenge for us. We’ve got to hold our ground and keep them from the big plays and eating up the clock,” Poe said.

The Texans’ offense will also face a difficult task of grinding out yards against one of the league’s better defenses.

“They have a very talented and physical defense,” Poe said. “We’re looking forward to the matchup.”

Emmanuel Moore turned in another huge game for the Texans last week, catching 11 passes for 139 yards with two touchdowns. Moore has 74 catches for 1,034 yards and 15 touchdowns.
