Football: Texans throttle Tigers

By John English | Published Saturday, August 30, 2014

Using a balanced offensive attack and strong defensive effort, the Northwest Texans rolled past Corsicana 34-14 at Northwest ISD Stadium.

It was Bill Poe’s debut on the Texans’ sidelines.

Penalties proved to be an issue for both teams in the first quarter of play. Corsicana had a kickoff return for a touchdown called back, and Northwest had a punt return for a touchdown brought back on a personal foul.

Northwest scored the only points of the first half when Chris Hamilton kicked a 35-yard field goal early in the second quarter.

The Texans’ offense found its footing in the second half, driving 74 yards on its opening possession and scoring on a 38-yard touchdown pass to Emmanuel Moore from Jesse Drummer.

Drummer and Moore hooked up again for a touchdown on a 9-yard pass. Drummer threw for 247 yards, completing 23 of his 34 attempts.

Moore hauled in eight passes for 96 yards.

Texan running back Quentin Thorpe finished the game with 163 yards on 20 carries and scored on a 2-yard run.

Corsicana quarterback Kishawn Kelley threw two touchdown passes late to Danair Martin and Jamaal Evans, but could not mount any kind of a comeback.

The Northwest defense that replaced all but two starters from last year held Corsicana to 13 first downs. Corsicana finished with 314 yards of offense.
