Football: Dragons try to stop Era

By Richard Greene | Published Wednesday, September 3, 2014

The Chico Dragons opened the season in dominating fashion Saturday with its 56-14 win over Frost.

Now, six days later the Dragons will need to put together another solid effort against another high-flying team – the Era Hornets.

Era, who hammered one of Chico’s 5-2A mates Bells 53-35 Friday, will host Chico at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

After watching the Hornets on film against Bells, Chico coach Stephen Carter was impressed.

“I told the kids Era is one of the best teams we’ve seen in two years,” Carter said. “Their quarterback, Jacob Metzler, is phenomenal.

“Coach [Matt] Fanning has his kids believing they can win. They are a very physical team and well-coached. We have our work cut out for us.”

Behind Metzler, Era jumped out to a 35-0 lead in the first half last week. Metzler ran for 181 yards and three touchdowns. He also threw for a score.

While Metzler commands a lot of attention, Carter points out that Hornet running back Jose De Los Santos can also create havoc.

“He’s a big, strong kid,” Carter said.

The Dragons’ defense behind all-state linebacker Hagen Davis limited Frost to 96 yards of offense last week. Hagen and his brother Garon each recorded 16 tackles.

The Chico offense piled up more than 600 yards against Frost. Crese Redman ran for 164 of the Dragons’ 361 on the ground.
