A radiant smile never left Serena Estrada’s face Thursday afternoon during the Texas Girls Coaches Association 1-3A all-star match.
“It was really fun,” Estrada said.
It helped that the Decatur libero was on the Red team that dominated the match, winning in four games, 25-12, 25-22, 21-25, 25-16.
“I never get tired of winning,” Estrada said, after making 15 digs in the match – including 10 in the Red squad’s 25-22 second-set win.
She made 10 of her 11 serves, including serving match point. A kill by LaVernia’s Brooke Haliscak prevented Estrada from scoring the final point.
Round Top Carmine’s Megan Holt put down the winner for the Red team on the next point.
Holt was honored after the game as the 1-3A Athlete of the Year.
Bellville’s Hannah Baker was the game’s MVP after setting up numerous points for Holt, Leon’s Thelma Flores and Argyle’s Brooke Robertson.
Holt finished with 10 kills. Robertson made eight kills, and Flores four.
The Blue squad was led by Haliscak with 12 kills and two aces. She served seven straight points, including the two aces, to rally the Blue squad from a 20-18 deficit to a victory in game four.
Estrada was part of a strong defense for the Red team that tried to contain Haliscak and the Blue team’s other top hitters.
“I didn’t know what to expect coming in,” Estrada said. “I’m glad I got the experience.”
The 9-3A second-team libero and member of the 2013 state champions is headed to Salem International University to continue her volleyball career.
