Brendon Kirby and Drew Jones shot matching 79s to lead the Decatur Eagles to a season-opening victory Wednesday at The Resort.
Decatur’s foursome of Kirby, Jones, Nick Trachta and Charlie Shannon combined to shoot a 355, winning the tournament by 10 strokes over Azle. Boswell finished 12 strokes back in third.
“It was a good first tournament, and we didn’t have all our guys,” said Decatur coach Fernando Escobar. “They did great considering the fact they’ve not been out there [practicing] because of the weather.”
Kirby ended up third in the tournament based off having the better opening holes than Jones, who finished fourth. A Pantego golfer won the event with a 77.
“Kirby said it was his best round,” Escobar said. “He was controlling his drive and hitting fairways. It was fun to watch.”
Shannon fired an 85. Trachta finished with a 112.
Decatur’s second foursome combined for a 462. Dawson Thompson shot an 111. Kale Bronniman finished with a 113. Lawson Harris hit a 114. Drew Graves fired a 124.
Decatur will play at the Byron Nelson Tournament in Trophy Club Feb. 24.
