Decatur’s top two boys singles players – Pedro Marson and Gavin Buchanan – are heading to regionals.
The two finished second and third at last week’s District 9-3A tournament. But after the event, the district champion Jake Johnson of Krum broke his foot, moving the Decatur pair up to first and second.
Johnson defeated Marson for the title last week. Decatur coach Rhonda Whiteaker said Marson played steady and solid up until the finals.
“It was a tough match for him,” she said. “He played steady all the way.”
Buchanan went into the tournament seeded fourth. He upset the third seed to get to third.
“That wasn’t expected,” Whiteaker said. “He played good steady tennis.”
The Decatur boys doubles squad of Jared and Jimmy Amos finished third.
