Decatur heads to tough tourney

Being a defending state champion has its perks. The Decatur Lady Eagles will get to enjoy one this weekend.

The Lady Eagles received a rare 4A invite to take part in the Adidas Texas Volleyball Invitational in Pearland Thursday through Saturday.

The tough, prestigious tournament will feature eight of the top 10 6A programs and a majority of the top 10 5A programs, along with the other top public and private school teams in the state.

“We’re real excited to play all the hard teams. It’s a chance for us to get better,” Cooper Martin said. “It’s definitely a challenge.”

Decatur opens the tournament Thursday with Round Rock McNeil and then will face Bellaire. The Lady Eagles’ final game Thursday will be against Houston Clear Falls, which is ranked No. 4 in 6A.

“We feel honored to be asked to come,” said Decatur coach Claire Benedict-Gay. “There are a lot of great teams there. We hope to compete and try to get better.

“It’s a three-day tournament. It’s a long time to play. I look forward to seeing how we push through it.”

Northwest will also make the trip to Pearland. The Lady Texans will play San Antonio Johnson, Allen and Clements Thursday.
