“I had the best deadlift and I’m proud of that,” Roberts said. “I was going for the school record (575). I went for it but unfortunately I couldn’t get it.

“I’m looking forward to next year.”

Roberts finished 60 pounds back of Graham’s Derek Baynes who took second and clinched the second of two state-qualifying spots. Conner Barnes, of Sanger won the class with 1,500 pounds.

Roberts said he hoped to get 580 on squat, entering the meet.

“My max was 560 and I went for that for my second and third lifts and missed it,” Roberts said. “I really wished I could’ve got another 20 pounds.”

Roberts’ teammate Graham Cowdrey finished sixth in the class with a total of 1,160. Cowdrey had a squat of 470, bench press 290 and deadlift of 400.

Trying to charge up in the standings in the 275-pound class, Decatur’s Dakota Williams had the bar loaded up with 565 pounds.

During the lift, he felt his grip slipping.

“My fingers started slipping on the bar. I didn’t want to drop it and get disqualified for dumping,” Williams said.

Williams caught the bar but scratched on the lift. He finished with a deadlift of 510 to land him in fifth place in his weight class. His final tally was 1,375.

“I wish I could’ve done more,” Williams said. “I was hoping to get more on squat. I tried to go for 600.”

Williams had a squat of 560. He bench pressed 305.

“This is definitely something to build upon,” he said.

In the 123-pound class, Alex Samano took fifth with a tally of 775.

Samano lifted 295 on squat, 145 on bench press and 335 on deadlift.

“I tried my best. I didn’t get what I wanted to. My deadlift should’ve been more,” said the sophomore Samano.

His teammates Jesus Gam and Dawsom Thompson took eighth and 10th in the class.
