The Bridgeport Bulls will return to the playoffs Monday for the first time since 2004.
The Bulls (12-16), who finished fourth in District 9-3A, will open the postseason with a Class 3A Region II bi-district matchup against 10-3A champion Frisco Lone Star at 7 p.m. at Denton Ryan High School.
After the long playoff drought, Bridgeport coach Alan Green said his team is glad to have this opportunity.
“We’re excited to still be playing and be practicing the last couple of days,” Green said. “Hopefully we’ll be ready for Monday.”
Bridgeport, which finished the regular season Feb. 7 with a playoff-clinching win over Krum, took on Henrietta in a practice game Friday in Jacksboro.
Monday, the Bulls will see the state’s 12th-ranked team in Lone Star. The Rangers are 22-6 and went 7-1 in district play. Three Lone Star players are averaging more than nine points per game – freshman Cameron Gooden (9.3), senior Jonathan Clay (9.5) and junior Zach Brown (10.9).
“They are a great team, very athletic and quick,” Green said. “We’ve got a game plan and are going to go out, give it our best and see what happens.”
The bi-district game will be the first postseason game for Bridgeport’s seniors Alex Samples, Derrick Stanford, Dalton Hudson and Stephen Howdeshell.
“I’m excited for them and for our younger guys,” Green said. “Hopefully it’ll start a tradition.”
