Kenzie Elkins reached up and grabbed the rebound with 4.75 seconds remaining and then drained two free throws to send the Boyd Lady Yellowjackets back to the playoffs.
Boyd held off Peaster, 44-40 Saturday to secure the fourth seed out of District 9-2A. It’s the team’s first playoff berth since 2012 and third in five seasons.
“This team is special. They fought through all sorts of adversity,” said Boyd coach Lynn Cranfill. “One of our goals was to make the playoffs. That’s what we did. We’re excited.”
Boyd (16-9) will open the playoffs with a Class 2A Region II bi-district game at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in Aledo against District 10-2A champion Grandview.
“They are good. They play hard from start to finish and press,” Cranfill said.
Against Peaster, the Lady Yellowjackets led throughout. Their halftime lead was 28-17 thanks to 12 points from Abby Harrell, who finished with 18.
“Abby came out of a funk and played well,” Cranfill said. “Everyone played well.”
Amber Montgomery added nine points and four assists. Sofia Scott scored a career-high eight.
Boyd carried a 33-27 advantage into the fourth quarter. Peaster made a run, getting within two 42-40, and took a shot at tying the game.
After the miss, Elkins grabbed the game-sealing rebound.
