The Alvord Lady Bulldogs leaned on their defense early on to edge the Maypearl Lady Panthers 34-29 in a Class 2A Region 2 bi-district playoff game Wednesday night at the Weatherford High School gym.
“I felt like (my team) stepped up and played the game very well, and we ended up with a win,” said senior guard Marissa Schedcik.
The game was a pressure-cooker in the end. After holding a narrow lead the entire night, Maypearl struck late and took a 29-28 lead with only 90 seconds left.
Several seconds later, Schedcik caught an inbounds pass from senior guard Lauren Hart and buried a jump shot to give Alvord a 30-29 lead. They never trailed again.
Schedcik finished with nine points. Hart led the team with 14, including a pair of three pointers.
Junior forward Brianna Ponder had 7. Senior forward Kandi Rose had three. Freshman post Cierra Rangel had one.
Alvord was kept well below its scoring average.
“They were doing an extended zone defense and doing a very good job of staying in the passing lanes and stopping us before we could get to the paint,” said head coach Rob Schmucker.
“They were extending it out there,” Schedcik said. “They were pressuring us. We had to adjust to it. We were having a hard time, and luckily our defense stepped up.”
Alvord’s defense held Maypearl to nine points in the first half – only two in the second quarter.
“I know both teams were on an eight-day break,” Schmucker said. “We might not have played up to our level, but we still pulled out a win. We made the big shot in the end and kept them from making the big shot.”
Alvord now has a 20-9 record. They faced Howe Friday night. The winner of that match will face either Paradise or Sunnyvale in the third round.
