Wise County Veterans building museum

The veterans of Wise County, after years of a concerted search effort, in cooperation with the Bridgeport City Council, have acquired a beautiful facility in which to house our Wise County Veterans Memorial Museum. This facility is located at 1308 10th St. in Bridgeport.

As a group, we designed and built the Wise County Veterans Memorial Park in Decatur. This park has been recognized as a proud and beautiful structure that reflects the pride and patriotic attitude of its citizenry. It has been copied many times and visited by dignitaries, out-of-town visitors and locals and is used for ceremonial purposes.

The new museum will be an extension of that park and a proud addition for the benefit of all Wise County citizens. Just as the Wise County Veterans Memorial Park is your park, so also the Wise County Veterans Museum will be your museum. The work is just starting.

We are in the planning stage now of how to present this museum in an accurate and meaningful manner, in order to attract and educate our community and in particular our school-age children. We have much to be proud of in Wise County. We have some true heroes who have sacrificed much and need to be recognized, including a Medal of Honor recipient and members of the Lost Battalion.

So, how do we get started? We are collecting appropriate material that may be displayed in the museum. If you have any, or know someone who does, we would be happy to include it in our display. We have over 4,000 square feet of display area.

You can gift it to us, or you can retain ownership and simply loan it to us. This includes all periods of military engagements and could include photographs, letters to home, ribbons, uniforms, etc. Sorry, but we have no room for tanks, artillery pieces or fighter planes!

In addition, we will need to purchase/build many items such as display cases, wall dividers, video equipment, mannequins, lighting, plaques etc. If you can help with some of these expenses, that would be most appreciated. Spread the word – we will recognize significant donors with a plaque placed near the entrance, just as we did at the park.

We have committed to the city of Bridgeport and to all the people of Wise County to build a first-class facility we can all be proud of. Your support in helping us achieve this goal will be most appreciated, as it has been in the past.

If you can help in any way, please contact Mr. Hank Hasselbach at 832-656-1361.

With pride, patriotism and dedication,
Wise County Veterans Group
