Memorial Day more important than makeup

By Dustin Bates | Published Wednesday, May 28, 2014

I feel Memorial Day is a very important day for Americans for many reasons.

It is to honor our servicemen and servicewomen, past and present. It is a day for families to remember and decorate graves of family members who served in our military and may have died defending the freedom that we enjoy today.

It is hard enough to keep the Pledge of Allegiance in our schools or “In God We Trust” on our dollar bills without taking Memorial Day from our children.

Decatur ISD, along with many other school districts, decided Memorial Day should be used as a makeup day for the days that were missed this winter because of inclement weather. I feel there have been plenty of other days that could be used to make these days up without using one of the most patriotic days in America.

It seems to me we are forgetting what this country was founded on and what so many brave men and women have fought so hard to protect – some giving the ultimate sacrifice.
