Hall of Honor inducts Woodruff

Decatur Mayor Martin Woodruff was inducted last month into the Military Science Hall of Honor at the University of Texas at Arlington.

For more than 25 years, UTA’s Military Science Department and the Cadet Corps Alumni Council have held an annual Hall of Honor (HOH) induction ceremony. HOH members are nominated and the criteria for selection includes military and civilian accomplishments, community service and involvement with the university.

Woodruff is a 1970 UTA Distinguished Military Graduate with a Bachelor of Science in mathematics. At UTA he was a member of the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) where he participated in the Insurgent Team, graduated from the ROTC Flight Training Program and was the Corps Commander in the spring of 1970. He received a Regular Army commission in the Transportation Corps in July 1970.

He served on active duty with the U.S. Army from 1970 to 1979 with the first two years in the infantry to include a combat tour in Vietnam. He was an infantry platoon leader and then on an adviser team to a Vietnamese unit. Following that he served in a variety of Transportation Corps assignments and left the army a captain.

In 1979, Woodruff joined Poco Graphite Inc. and was manager of administration and planning when he left in 2000. Today he’s a management consultant.

In addition to being mayor, Woodruff is also involved with the Lions Club, Boy Scouts of America, Decatur Eagle Boosters Club, Wise County Veterans Group, Wise County Community Chorus, United Way, First United Methodist Church and Wise County Health Forum. He is also on the board of directors for the Decatur Economic Development Corp.

He and his wife, Janna, have three grown children and eight grandchildren.
