The choice to be the next football coach and athletic director in Decatur is down to three candidates.
Decatur ISD Superintendent Rod Townsend said he and the selection committee narrowed the pool to three candidates Friday after two days of interviewing. The district received 144 applications.
“We interviewed some good guys and had a nice solid pool of candidates,” Townsend said. “We were impressed with a number of them, but there were three that really came out on top.”
One of the three will replace Kyle Story, who resigned last month after being hired to be the first football coach and athletic coordinator at Frisco Independence High School. Story finished his nearly 15-year tenure with the district Feb. 28.
A second set of interviews will be held with the three finalists March 18 and 19.
“We are planning to call a special meeting March 20 to announce the lone finalist,” Townsend said. “A lot of the ones we are serious about are going quickly. We want to move and decide which one of the three.”
Townsend said the three finalists include a current Class A head football coach and athletic director, a 5A head football coach and a 5A coordinator.
“These are the three that rose to the top,” he said.
As of Friday, Townsend said only Story and offensive coordinator Jayson Lavender had resigned to go to Frisco.
