Club donates record amount

The Decatur Junior Woman’s Club awarded more than $35,000 in its 2013-2014 fundraising year. At its meeting May 12, Club President Mary Lois Spain-Sipes on behalf of the club presented $6,375 to five charities, one more charity than previous years. The benefactors include Wise Choices Pregnancy Resource Center, Wise Area Relief Mission (WARM), Wise County Christian Counseling, Court Appointed Special Advocates of Wise and Jack Counties and Raquel’s Wings For Life.

Record Breaking Donation

The club also awarded a $1,000 scholarship each to Decatur High School seniors Morgan Haney and Megan O’Flaherty.

Club members also donated $1,000 to Decatur Parks and Recreation, $500 to Wise County Special Needs Baseball and $250 to 1000 Miles Til Home, which provides homes to wounded war veterans.

The club raised $36,374.93 through its four trademark events – City on a Hill Color Run 5K and Fun Run, Park Classic golf tournament, Daddy Daughter Dance and Wise Hoops 3-on-3 basketball tournament.

Last year the Club donated $33,000, which was about double the previous year’s award.
