Bridgeport police responded to a shooting Thursday in a residential neighborhood not far from downtown.

Assistant Police Chief Steve Stanford said officers and medics were dispatched to a home in the 1200 block of Carpenter Street at 9:39 Thursday morning. He said a man found his wife in a back bedroom with a single gunshot wound to the chest.

The victim, who is in her mid-30s, was flown to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth where she was in stable condition Friday, Stanford said.

“We’re in the process of piecing it together,” Stanford said. “Due to the circumstances, we’ve called in the Texas Ranger.”

Stanford said all signs point to the shooting being self-inflicted, but they wanted to do their due diligence to rule out other possibilities.

Stanford said Friday Texas Ranger Tony Bradford from Parker County was now in charge of the investigation.
