Richard Samuel Goode Jr., 89, of Gladewater, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014.
Graveside service was Jan. 18 at Gladewater Memorial Park with Larry W. Osborne officiating.
Richard was born Nov. 28, 1924 in Bridgeport. After graduating from Bridgeport schools in 1942, he served in World War II as a sergeant in the Army field artillery.
He attended Decatur (now Dallas) Baptist College for two years, then earned his bachelor of science degree in education at North Texas State (now the University of North Texas) in 1950. After working several jobs including gas company field work and insurance investigating, he landed his first classroom job in Orange in 1951.
He began teaching high school social studies in Gladewater in 1956 and spent 28 years there as a teacher, counselor and principal. He retired in 1984 after 34 years in public education. He also collected and sold antiques and formerly owned Main Street Treasures in Gladewater.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Samuel Goode Sr. and Mary Alice Moore; his first wife, Virginia Dillard Goode; and several siblings.
He is survived by his wife, Anne Goode of Gladewater; sons Rick Goode of Gladewater and Roger Goode and wife, Christy, of Cushing; three stepchildren, Dane Hufstetler of Longview, Shayne Dickson of White Oak and Delight Inocencio of Gladewater; four step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
