Martha Elizabeth Renshaw Jefferson, 99, died Friday, July 18, 2014, in Alexandria, Va.
Memorial service is 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 28, at Plymouth Haven Baptist Church with burial at Quantico National Cemetery in Quantico, Va.
Martha was born March 29, 1915, in Decatur, the only child of Holly Renshaw and Jessie Vandiver.
Martha was literally “born a Southern Baptist.” The first Baptist Church in Wise County was organized in the home of her great-grandfather, Samuel Perrin. Her great-grandfather Dr. William Renshaw married Sally Worthington, who was instrumental in the founding of Decatur Baptist College. Martha lived adjacent to the grounds, then attended and graduated from Decatur High School and Decatur Baptist College in 1933.
She married George Thomas Jefferson in 1940 in Fort Worth, moving to Alexandria, Va., in 1963.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George; and son Bret.
She is survived by daughter Betty Woodcock of Richmond, Va.; son Tom Jefferson of Eugene, Ore.; grandchildren Ellen Woodcock of Richmond, Va., and Anne Weatherford of Mansfield; and great-grandchildren Olivia and Cole Weatherford.
