Lonnie Joel Vandergriff, 64, a homebuilder and rock and brick mason, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, in Chico.
Funeral was Jan. 2 at Hawkins Funeral Home in Bridgeport with the Revs. J.J. Stevens, Tom Merritt and Alan Youngblood officiating. Burial was at Olive Branch Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Johnny Burrell, Kyle Bilby, Jeff Bilby, Daniel Vandergriff, Scott Sherman and Roy Stanley.
Lonnie was born June 9, 1949, to Junior Lee and Azell (Morgan) Vandergriff in Fort Worth. He married Diana Weinheimer Dec. 31, 1994, in Decatur.
Lonnie owned and operated Vandergriff Construction for 46 years. He was a 32nd-degree Mason and member of the Chico and Grapevine Masonic Lodges. He was also an avid outdoorsman, and in 2008, he traveled to Africa for a hunting safari with his wife, Diana. For many years, he was a fishing guide at Lake Ray Roberts and held the title of Bass Angler of the Year in 1991 and 1993.
He was preceded in death by his father, Junior Lee Vandergriff; and his brother-in-law, Loyall Utter.
Survivors include his wife, Diana Vandergriff of Chico; sons Duane Vandergriff and wife, Leah, of Hurst, and Daniel Vandergriff and wife, Sandy, of Tulsa, Okla.; daughters Amy Vasquez Jordan and fianc , Jonathan Teich, of Cresson, and Katie Olson and husband, Adam, of Alamogordo, N.M.; and grandchildren Dylan, Hannah, Dakota and Brazos.
He is also survived by his mother, Azell Vandergriff of Keller; sisters Barbara Youngblood and husband, Alan, of Mena, Ark., Karen Utter of Fort Worth, Joan Vandergriff of Colleyville and Debbie Long and husband, David, of Azle; aunt Vernell Morgan Kanode and husband, Lenny, of Keller; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
