HIGH SPEED CHASE – One person was arrested following a high-speed pursuit through Wise County Monday afternoon that ended with officers shooting out the suspect’s tires near Bridgeport. The pursuit began when Chad E. Ervin, 26, of Springtown refused to pull over for a state trooper around 11:30 a.m. on U.S. 81/287 near Sunset. The chased headed south on U.S. 81/287, down Farm Road 51, Texas 114 and included some rural roads in the area as well. Officers eventually shot out the back tires of Ervin’s vehicle about 1 mile east of Bridgeport on Texas 114. He was arrested for attempting to evade arrest, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a prohibited weapon. He also had three outstanding warrants. As of Tuesday afternoon, he remained in the Wise County Jail. Another highway patrolman who was coming to assist in the pursuit crashed into a storage building in Boyd. SMITH APPOINTED – The Bridgeport City Council Tuesday appointed A.Z. Smith to Place 1, previously held by Scott Cheves. Earlier in the meeting, the council had accepted the resignation of Cheves, whose family has built a home outside city limits.
ROWE TO SEEK SECOND TERM – District Clerk Brenda Rowe has announced she will seek a second term for the 271st Judicial District, which covers Wise and Jack counties. “It’s been a privilege to serve the people of Wise County for the past three years. I’m looking forward to the exciting and challenging times ahead as we move forward with new technology from a paper to a paperless filing system,” Rowe said in an announcement from the Wise County Republican Party.
GRASS FIRE – Several local fire departments responded to a grass fire in the 500 block of County Road 1557 just after 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. Chico, Crafton, Bridgeport, Alvord and Sand Flat fire departments were all called to the scene after a blaze escaped a burn barrel. A barn and several tires also burned.
UNITED WAY KICKOFF – The United Way of Wise County will hold its 2014 Campaign Kick-Off Luncheon 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday at the Decatur Civic Center. The event will include an agency fair where all the agencies who participate in United Way funding are invited to set up tabletop displays so the public can come and learn what they do. Live musical entertainment and a luncheon speaker are also planned. Tickets for the luncheon are $15. STORYTIME RETURNS – Storytime at the Bridgeport Public Library returns today. Preschool Storytime, for ages 3-6, is 10:30 a.m. Children are invited to come listen to stories and fingerplays about summer. Programs will take place in the children’s section of the library. Toddler Storytime, for children 0-36 months, is at 11:15. These lapsit programs introduce younger children to books, rhymes and songs.
MEET THE DRAGONS – Meet the Dragons is 6 tonight at Dragon Stadium in Chico.
