PAIR NABBED FOR EMS VEHICLE THEFT – An off-duty patrol sergeant with the Wise County Sheriff’s Office noticed something suspicious in the Wal-Mart parking lot last Friday – two men altering a Sacred Cross EMS all-terrain vehicle on the back of a trailer. It turns out the ATV, the trailer and a utility vehicle had just been stolen by two men in Denton. Stephen A. Barrow, 28, of Gainesville, and Dennis R. Kerr, 22, of Krum, were arrested and charged with theft between $20,000 and $100,000, a third-degree felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison. RADIO SHACK CLOSING – Radio Shack in Decatur will close by the end of the month, according to Joe Neil and Marianne Henderson. Joe Neil said iCopy, their office supply and print business, will offer a large selection of electronic accessories to help fill the merchandise void. The Hendersons will liquidate their Radio Shack inventory beginning today and plan to have the store transition complete in the next couple of weeks. Read more in the midweek Messenger.
CHICO FEST – Chico Fest is 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, on the Chico Square. There will be a children’s pageant, stickhorse rodeo, church booths, bingo, a cake walk, a slide, a jump house and booths selling food, jewelry, homemade baked goods, crafts and services. A Thompson Center Venture 300 Win Mag rifle and a porch/yard swing will be raffled off. Raffle tickets are available at Sheila’s Hair Palace, Wise Feed, Muggs & Juggs, GTG Solutions and Chico Butane Company, and proceeds benefit the Chico High School scholarship fund. CHICO FEST PAGEANT – Registrations are being accepted for the 3rd Annual Lil Miss/Mr. Chico Fest Pageant to be held Saturday, Oct. 19. The pageant will be fall-themed. Prizes will be awarded in four age divisions for boys and girls up to 10 years. Hosted by the Chico Chamber of Commerce, funds raised contribute to scholarships awarded each year. FALL FESTIVAL AND BLOOD DRIVE – The First United Methodist Church of Boyd will host a blood drive by Carter BloodCare 9 a.m.-noon Saturday during its Lord’s Acre Fall Festival. The event will feature children’s games and activities, baked goods, homemade treats, crafts, vendors and a flea market. A homemade turkey dinner will be served from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. followed by a live auction at 1:30 p.m.
HOG WILD AROUND ALVORD – The Alvord Public Library will host a program by Glenn Guess to educate the public about feral hogs in the Wise County area at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, at the Alvord City Hall council meeting room. Guess is an expert hog hunter and will share his expertise. The program will allow time for questions and discussion. Refreshments will be served.
HONORING SURVIVORS – In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Decatur High School invites all cancer survivors to join in the spirit line before the game against Gainesville Friday. Report to the field before 7 p.m. to be recognized and form the spirit line.
RALLY – Overpasses for Obama’s Impeachment will have a rally 2-5 p.m. Friday at the U.S. 81/287 and Farm Road 407 overpass.
BEANS AND CORNBREAD – The Bridgeport Class of 2018 will hold a beans and cornbread supper 6 p.m. Friday at the Bridgeport Middle School cafeteria. Cost is $5. The event will also feature a silent auction and baked goods for sale by donation. For more information call E.J. Morrow at 940-389-8590.
COOKING DEMO – Helen Fields of Paradise will cook her honey and bacon Brussels sprouts pizza recipe in a demonstration 4-6 p.m. Friday at Brookshire’s Food and Pharmacy in Bridgeport. Fields will cook the same recipe for her chance at $1 million in 46th Pillsbury Bake-Off contest Nov. 11 in Las Vegas.
FUNERAL – Service for Eston Poland, 90, of Lake Worth is pending at Jones Family Funeral Home in Bridgeport.
