PIPPIN PLEADS TO COURTHOUSE FIRE – Johnny Roy Pippin Jr., 27, of Decatur pleaded guilty yesterday to charges related to sparking a chemical fire inside the Wise County Courthouse last year and received an 18-year prison sentence. He also pleaded guilty to other felony charges such as making a death threat against an elected official (County Attorney James Stainton), one count of burglary, one count of theft and five additional charges for violating probation. The fire on Sept. 5, 2012, forced an evacuation of the courthouse. Read more in the midweek Wise County Messenger on newsstands today.
BALLOT BY MAIL DEADLINE – To vote in the Nov. 5 election through ballot by mail, applications must be received at the Wise County Elections Office by the close of the business day Friday. Applications may be mailed to P.O. Box 1597, Decatur, Texas 76234, delivered by common carrier or faxed to 940-626-4283. To be eligible to vote early by mail in Texas, you must: be 65 years or older; be disabled; be out of the county on election day and during the period for early voting by personal appearance; or be confined in jail, but otherwise eligible.
EARLY VOTING CONTINUES – Another 61 people cast ballots in early voting for the Nov. 5 election yesterday. Early voting runs 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday through Nov. 1 at three Wise County locations: the Decatur Civic Center, 2010 W. U.S. 380; Rhome City Hall, 105 1st St.; and the Bridgeport Law Enforcement Center, 1000 Thompson St.
BONFIRE AND HOT DOGS – Decatur High School will host a free community hot dog cookout at the Battle of the Big Sandy Bonfire at 6 tonight. The bonfire will follow immediately after around dusk. Wise Electric Coop is providing the hot dogs for the annual event.
HEALTH FORUM – The Wise County Health Forum meets 9 a.m. Thursday at the Decatur City Hall Community Room.
LIONS GOLF TOURNAMENT – The Decatur Lions Club 9th Annual Golf Tournament is Saturday at the Decatur Country Club. Cost is $60 per player and $240 per team. HISTORICAL TOUR – The Annual Wise County Historical Society Tour is 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Wise County Heritage Museum on South Trinity Street in Decatur. The stops will include: Weatherford College Wise County Campus (historical exhibits); the Bridgeport Museum on Halsell Street; a stop for lunch at Jorje’s in Paradise; the former Boss Shannon home; the site of Draco; Cottondale and the grave of Machine Gun Kelley; and (if time allows) Aurora Cemetery and Deep Creek Cemetery. The tour involves some walking. The public is invited to join the tour anywhere along the way.
FRIEND TO FRIEND – Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Wise County and the Friend to Friend Coalition are hosting Friend to Friend: Staying Healthy Together at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29, at the Bridgeport Community Center, 1102 Lawdwin Ave. Attendees will learn the importance of mammograms and pap tests and will find out how to access financial resources and fully-funded services in this area. There will be retail and educational exhibits, refreshments and speakers. Call the Extension office to register for the event, 940-627-3341.
VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT – NISD Partners in Education is looking for community members to speak to students about the importance of higher education and present information on the Texas Scholars program one day during the week of November 4-8 at an NISD middle school. A PowerPoint will be provided for speakers. The Texas Scholars program focuses on education and career planning during middle school and high school and prepares students for the transition to life after high school regardless of the path they choose. HOUSING AUTHORITY POLICY REVIEW - The Bridgeport Housing Authority annual and five-year plan policy changes and utility allowance are now available for a 45-day public review. A meeting to discuss the review will be 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, at 1508 Cobb St.
BLOOD DRIVE – The Decatur Rotary Club will host a Carter BloodCare blood drive noon-6 p.m. today at CVS Pharmacy in Decatur.
