REMEMBERING THE JUDGE – The county judge’s office remains closed today, and most other county offices will be closed 9 a.m.-1 p.m. tomorrow in honor of Wise County Judge Bill McElhaney who died Monday. A public memorial service is 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at the Decatur Civic Center. Read more about his service to the community and county in the midweek Wise County Messenger on newsstands today.

SENIOR PARENT MEETING – The Bridgeport High School counselors will have a senior parent meeting Thursday in the BHS library. Senior parents can attend a meeting from noon-1 p.m. or 6-7 p.m. The counselors will discuss scholarship information, testing, college applications, etc.

DEMOCRATS TO MEET – The Wise County Democratic Party will meet at 6:15 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21 in the courtroom of the Wise County Law Enforcement Center, 200 Rook Ramsey Dr., in Decatur.

FIRE DEPARTMENT FUNDRAISER – The Bridgeport Volunteer Fire Department’s annual barbecue cook-off and all-night 4×4 riding is Saturday at Northwest OHV Park. Live music featuring Cody Wells, Cody Robbins, Fezzent and Phil Hamilton starts at noon. There will also be washer pitchin’ and horseshoes tournaments and a kid’s area. Entry fee for the Lonestar Barbecue Society-sanctioned cook-off is $75. There is $3,000 in guaranteed prize money. TAILGATE PARTY – The Chico Athletic Booster Club will hold a tailgate party Friday before the Chico Dragons play Lindsay. Set-up is at 5 p.m. on the road between the fieldhouse and the field.

HORSESHOES AND WASHERS – Register teams of two for the horseshoe and washers tournaments at the Bridgeport Volunteer Fire Department’s annual barbecue cook-off Saturday at Northwest OHV Park. Cost is $20 per team per tournament. First-place in each event receives 40 percent, and second-place gets 20 percent. Or you can register that day at 11 a.m. for the horseshoe tournament, which begins at noon and 2:30 p.m. for the washers tournament that starts at 3 p.m.

HEALTH FAIR – The 2nd Annual Weatherford College Wise County Health Fair is 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. today at the college. There will be free health screenings, flu shots, immunizations and community health organizations and vendor booths. For more information, call 940-626-3282.

BULL SELECTION — Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Wise County is hosting a herd bull selection meeting tomorrow at the Decatur Livestock Market, 2473 N. FM 51. Those in attendance will learn what attributes a bull should have to make their operation more profitable. Registration is at 5 p.m., and dinner is at 5:30 with the program to follow. Cost is $10. DRAGON SHOOTOUT – The junior class at Chico High School will host a sporting clay event Friday to raise money for their class. The event will take place at Fossil Pointe north of Decatur on Farm Road 51. Registration begins at 8 a.m., and the shoot will begin at 9. GOLF TOURNAMENT – The Grayson Garrett Memorial Golf Tournament is Saturday, Oct. 26, at the Bridgeport County Club. The day and night scramble will tee off at 3 p.m. and dark. The 3-man scramble is $300 per team, and entry deadline is Oct. 21. Awards will be presented for the top three teams. Live and silent auctions will be held. CHICO FEST PAGEANT – Register for the 3rd Annual Lil Miss/Mr. Chico Fest pageant – to be held Saturday – by calling Kelly Laney at 940-389-8286 or visiting the Chico Chamber of Commerce Facebook page. The fall-themed pageant awards prizes in four age divisions for boys and girls up to 10 years. Proceeds go to scholarships awarded annually.

CALENDAR FEEDBACK – Northwest ISD requests community feedback on the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 school calendar options. Now through Oct. 31, go to www.nisdtx.org/calendaroptions to view the calendars, a list of frequently asked questions and to complete the survey. The NISD school board will vote on the final school academic calendars in December.

“HAPPY DAYS” THEME – Newark’s 26th Annual Cruisin’ Days Friday through Sunday will feature a carnival and midway, live music, a parade at 10 a.m. Saturday, bingo, craft booths, concessions and a barbecue dinner Saturday evening as the Newark Volunteer Fire Department presents its annual awards prior to a dance.
