FIRE CAUSES POWER OUTAGE – A fire at an Oncor substation near Chico yesterday around 11:30 a.m. knocked out power in the Chico, Alvord and Sunset areas. Power was restored on the Chico side within three hours, but most customers in Alvord were without power until just after 1 a.m. today, Oncor area manager Sabrina Easley said. Power to all customers was restored by 2:45 a.m. In total, approximately 1,300 customers were affected. Easley said Oncor worked with the City of Alvord to determine the most critical need, which was fire suppression. Easley said power was directed to the city from another source in order to provide enough water pressure in case of a fire. Although no cause has yet been determined, the failed transformer was damaged beyond repair, making necessary a replacement. Work crews brought in a mobile unit for the interim. Officials from the city of Alvord and Oncor established a cooling station at Alvord Middle School for those affected by the power outages. In addition, the city of Chico opened the community room at City Hall.
