STANDOFF ENDS PEACEFULLY – What started off as a school lockdown in Decatur ended in an armed standoff west of Bridgeport yesterday morning. With a half-dozen heavily-armed and armored SWAT team officers standing by, James Warden, 43, walked out of a house in Airport Estates unarmed and was taken into custody by Bridgeport Police officers at 10:16 a.m. Warden had barricaded himself in the house after making a threat on a social networking website against a Decatur woman, an employee at Carson Elementary School, and their son, who is a student at Decatur High School. Both were moved to a safe location by Decatur Police, but both the Carson and DHS campuses were locked down with high security until news of an arrest was released around mid-morning. Bridgeport Assistant Police Chief Steve Stanford said Warden is expected to be charged with aggravated assault and terroristic threat. Read more in the midweek Messenger on newsstands today.

COUPLE ARRESTED FOR ABANDONMENT – Two people were arrested Sunday after Wise County Sheriff’s deputies rescued an 18-month-old left alone at a trailer home Saturday. The child was locked in a room with an electric space heater running, for approximately eight hours. Tiffany E. Barnes, 34, and Thomas W. Harris, 29, were arrested, and both were charged with abandoning a child and leaving in imminent danger to bodily injury, a second-degree felony. The parents told investigators they left the toddler at home because “he was sleeping, and we did not want to wake him.” They also told investigators they’d taken their 5-year-old with them to a doctor’s appointment. Both children were placed into the care of Child Protective Services. Barnes and Harris both posted their $10,000 bail by Monday and were released.
