SHELTER MIX UP – During the recent winter storm that covered the county in ice, 12 people used the Decatur Civic Center for shelter for four days. But it turns out the center should not have been used as a shelter at all. Civic Center Director Lori Sherwood told the Decatur City Council Monday she was caught by surprise when a Red Cross representative called and said they were coming out to set up the shelter. Once Red Cross representatives arrived, they began ticking off a list of items the Civic Center was expected to provide, including food and showers. Despite locking up the kitchen, it was still broken into, she told the council. Decatur Fire Chief Mike Richardson said it appears the cause of the mix up was a communication breakdown with the county. County Deputy Fire Marshal J.C. Travis said Tuesday that a Red Cross representative called him and told him they had a contract with the Civic Center. Travis said he and Fire Marshal Chuck Beard never thought about checking with the city. He said the county will work on communicating and pre-planning so the same mistakes are not repeated. NORTHWEST PROMOTES THORNELL – Northwest ISD has named Dr. Robert Thornell the district’s assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. NISD Superintendent Karen Rue made the recommendation to the school board at its meeting Monday, which was postponed a week due to the icy weather the previous week. Thornell, who previously served as NISD’s executive director of curriculum and staff development, succeeds Edward Chevallier, who retired after six years with the district. Thornell will begin transitioning into this new role after the first of the year.

WATCH WHAT YOU FLUSH – The City of Bridgeport has been seeing a larger number of sewer back-ups in the city lately due to increasing use of disposable wipes such as cleaning/disinfecting wipes, moist towelettes, baby wipes, personal hygiene wipes or similar disposable or “flushable” products. Unlike toilet paper, disposable wipes do not quickly disintegrate in water. Instead, these items stay largely intact as they travel through sewer pipes and easily get caught on roots or other debris, increasing the risk of clogs and sewage overflows. The city asks that residents throw these products in the trash rather than the toilet.
