COURTHOUSE TO BE BETTER PROTECTED – The 117-year-old Wise County courthouse will soon be getting a fire alarm system. Commissioners Monday approved spending $63,000 for the alarm, a first for the historic structure. The building currently has an elevator recall system, which includes smoke detectors in the elevator shaft only. When those are activated, the elevator goes to the first floor and then shuts down. The audible alarm can’t be heard throughout the building. Fire Marshal Chuck Beard said the new system is a much more robust warning system with warning devices on all floors. FOSTEL SEEKS 6TH TERM – District Judge John Fostel announced Monday that he will seek a sixth term in office. Fostel, who has served the 271st Judicial District Court since 1995, said he would like to continue serving the people of Wise and Jack counties. In a press release from the Wise County Republican Party, Fostel said as this area grows, he feels like he has a lot to contribute to help ensure citizens have open and prompt access to the justice system. HOME INVASION – An elderly man was beaten up and robbed at his home in southwest Wise County Monday night. The suspect, described as a heavy-set white male in his 30s with short dark hair and mustache, told the victim he needed help. Before long, several more suspects arrived to bind him, beat him and rob the home. Anyone with information can call Sgt. OFFICER SHOOTS OUT TIRES – A man who tried to flee from a traffic stop had a tire shot out by police Sunday night near Rhome. Octavio Fernandez, 31, of Fort Worth had four children in the car with him. In addition to traffic warrants out of Fort Worth, Fernandez was arrested for several more charges related to his ill-advised getaway attempt. Read the full story in today’s Messenger.
BULLDOG MANIA – Meet the 2013 Alvord Bulldogs football and cross country teams and cheerleaders before the JV game Thursday at Bulldog Stadium. A burger meal will be served for $5 beginning at 4:30 p.m., followed by the program at 5 p.m. The JV team takes on Millsap at 6 p.m.
GOLF TOURNAMENT – The Runaway Bay Ladies Golf Association and the Greater Runaway Bay Alliance is hosting a Labor Day golf tournament on Monday, Sept. 2. It’s open to men and women of all skill levels and is limited to 36 teams. Cost for the four-person scramble is $75 per player. Lunch will be served, and there will be awards for closest to the pin on hole 3, men’s and women’s longest drive on hole 11 and hit the target on hole 13. COLOR RUN – The Decatur Junior Woman’s Club will host the first City on a Hill Color Run 5K and Fun Run Saturday, Sept. 7. A Fun Run starts at 7:45 a.m., and the 5K starts at 8:15. Register online at cityhill5k.athlete360.com. Early registration ends Friday. Cost is $25 for the 5K and $10 for the Fun Run. Race day registration is $35 for the 5K and $15 for the Fun Run. Awards will be given to the top-three finishers in all age groups, and there will be ribbons for all Fun Run participants. All runners will receive a free T-shirt. FUNERALS – Service for Elton Mal McCurdy, 86, of Decatur is 11 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Decatur with burial at Fairview Cemetery. Family visitation is 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday at Coker-Hawkins Funeral Home in Decatur.
MEMORIAL for Brian Mooney, 41, of Decatur will be held at a later date. Coker-Hawkins is handling arrangements.
SERVICE for Ruby Robertson, 90, of Rhome is pending at Christian-Hawkins Funeral Home in Boyd.
GRAVESIDE service for Cal Karm, 53, of Paradise is 11 a.m. Thursday at Oaklawn Cemetery in Decatur. Family visitation is 6-8 tonight at Christian-Hawkins.
