TRAIN FATALITY – A man was killed overnight when he was struck by a train south of Bridgeport. The fatality happened around 1:30 a.m. More information will be posted as it is available at WCMessenger.com.

HOME INVADED – Investigators with Wise County Sheriff’s Office are searching for three men who invaded a home in Alvord early Monday morning. The suspects broke into a residence around 2:30 a.m. in the 200 block of Wickham Street. The 39-year-old occupant awoke in the dark to find three men attacking him. One of the suspects was armed with a knife. The victim escaped serious injury, and it’s still unknown why they invaded his home and what, if anything, they stole. Anyone with any information about the crime or who might have seen the suspects in the area that night are encouraged to call the Sheriff’s Office at 940-627-5971.

COUNTY TO MANAGE FAIRGROUNDS – The Wise County Sheriff’s Posse will no longer manage the local fairgrounds, which is owned by the county. County Judge Bill McElhaney said Monday in the regular commissioners’ meeting that the long-term lease with the Sheriff’s Posse has expired, and it will not be renewed. State law no longer allows the county to offer a long-term lease to any organization. Management and upkeep of the facility will revert to the county, and commissioners appointed a Wise County Fairgrounds Committee to oversee the transition. The committee includes Commissioners Kevin Burns and Danny White, Sheriff David Walker and Public Works Administrator Tom Goode. Read more in the midweek Messenger on newsstands tomorrow.

CONSTITUTION DAY – Volunteers including both local elected officials and citizens will read the U.S. Constitution 1:30-3 p.m. today at the Wise County Veterans Park in Decatur. The event will end with the ringing of bells. Today marks the 226th anniversary of the ratification of the document.

VOLUNTEER TRAINING – CASA of Wise and Jack Counties’ Fall Super Hero Training Academy Orientation is 7 tonight at the CASA office, 300 E. Pecan, in Decatur. For more information, call 940-627-7535.

PAJAMA STORYTIME – The Decatur Public Library will host a pajama storytime 6 p.m. Thursday. Children are invited to wear their pajamas and enjoy bedtime stories, a craft and milk and cookies. No sign up is required. Call the library at 940-393-0290 for more information.

AGING WISELY – The monthly community health information session which covers topics relating to aging and how caregivers/family members can help their elderly loved ones is 2-3:30 p.m. Friday at the Weatherford College Wise County Campus. The AHEC (Area Health Education Center) presents “Changes to Medicare/Medicaid after the Affordable Care Act” in Room 105.

CLAY SHOOT – Bridgeport FFA Booster Club will have a benefit clay shoot at Fossil Pointe Sporting Grounds Saturday. Registration begins at 8 a.m., and shooting starts at 9. Cost is $400 per four-person team, and prizes will be awarded to the top three teams. All proceeds benefit the booster club scholarship fund. GOLF TOURNAMENT – The newly formed Bridgeport Women’s Club will host a golf tournament benefiting Bridgeport Spirit of Christmas Sunday, Oct. 6, at Bridgeport Country Club. Registration is at noon with a shotgun start for the 3-man, 18-hole scramble at 1 p.m. First- and second-place prizes will be awarded for each flight, and there will be raffles. Participation costs are $1,000 for title sponsor (two teams and free mulligans per golfer); $500 for gift sponsor (one team); $300 team sponsor (one team); and $100 for sponsor a child. WASHER TOURNAMENT – The Bridgeport Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting a washer tournament during the Coal Miner’s Heritage Festival on Saturday, Oct. 5. Entry fee is $25 per team. ROAD CLOSURE – The City of Decatur will close portions of West Main, from U.S. 81/287 Business to East Main at U.S. 81/287 Business, temporarily 7 a.m.-7 p.m. today for street improvements. Residents are requested to not park on the street. The courthouse square will not be affected. Call the Public Works Department at 940-393-0260 for more information.

SOCIETY MEETING – The Wise County Fossil, Rock, and Mineral Society meets at 6:30 tonight at the Wesley Center of the First United Methodist Church in Decatur, 201 E. Main. Refreshments will be served, and the meeting topic will be “Show and Tell.” Members and guests will show their favorite rock specimens. A rock auction for members will be held afterwards.

FUNERALS – Graveside service for James Bruce Hull, 76, of Alvord is 11 a.m. today at DFW National Cemetery in Dallas.

FUNERAL for Raymond Gann, 83, of Decatur is 10 a.m. today at Coker-Hawkins Funeral Chapel in Decatur with burial at Oaklawn Cemetery.

GRAVESIDE service for Harold Cash, 75, of Decatur is 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Cottonwood Cemetery. Family visitation is 6-8 tonight at Coker-Hawkins.
