FIRE MARSHAL SEARCH – The pool of county fire marshal applicants has been narrowed to four. Sheriff David Walker yesterday told county commissioners at their regular meeting that background checks on the four finalists are under way and should be complete by tomorrow. The results will be sent to the hiring committee for review. Wise County has been without a fire marshal since Marc Dodd resigned 11 months ago.
TOW NAMED BOWIE CITY MANAGER – Former Alvord City Administrator Richard (Ricky) Tow Jr. has been named city manager of Bowie. Tow comes to Bowie after being city manager in Cameron, in Central Texas, since 2008. Tow served as city administrator and public works director in Alvord from 1997-2008. He was chief of the Alvord Volunteer Fire Department from 1988-2000. Tow and his wife are both graduates of Alvord High School.
FIRE RELIEF – Wise County is one of 32 counties in the state that is eligible for $406,000 in federal grants to hire people to clean up from 2011 wildfires. The U.S. Department of Labor announced the latest National Emergency Grant, which pushes Texas’ total to $1.2 million. The grant will pay for continued recovery in the 32 counties. Montague County is also eligible to participate in the grant.
BONE MARROW REGISTRATION – Wise Regional Health System will host a bone marrow registration drive noon to 3 p.m. Friday in the lobby of the main hospital. Approximately 20,000 people are currently in search of a bone marrow donation, and typically only 40 percent of them will find a match. Registering only requires a quick cheek swab. Anyone between the ages of 18 and 55 with a BMI under 40 can register.
SCV MEETING – The Sons of Confederate Veterans will meet at 7 tonight at the Wesley Center of the First United Methodist Church in Decatur. The program, “Cast Iron Forest,” will be presented by Steve Hilliard.
RODEO BANNERS – The Wise County Sheriff’s Posse and Decatur Main Street are working together to celebrate the 61st annual Wise County Youth Fair. Rodeo banners will be hung the end of the week. CHICO CITY COUNCIL – The Chico City Council will meet at 6 tonight at city hall. The brief agenda includes a street replacement project, calling a special election to fill an unexpired term and consideration of designating the city secretary signer for EDC loan agreement.
PARADISE HISTORICAL SOCIETY – The Paradise Historical Society meets at 7 tonight at Paradise United Methodist Church. Ray Monroe of Fort Richardson State Park in Jacksboro will present the program. Visitors are welcome.
DEMOCRAT MEETING – The Wise County Democrats meet at 7 p.m. Monday, March 18 in the second floor courtroom at the Wise County Courthouse. Nominations will take place for positions on the Wise County Democratic Party Committees.
