FIRE CAUSE STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION – City fire investigators yesterday looked through the wreckage left behind from Sunday night’s fire at the Eighter from Decatur apartment complex in Decatur. Fire Marshal Deroy Bennett said the exact cause is still undetermined, but it does not appear to be suspicious. The blaze started in Unit No. 6. He said it could take several weeks to determine what caused the blaze which displaced residents of eight units. Red Cross responded and was able to pay for a hotel for two families, while the other families found places to stay.
PHONE ISSUES – Two Decatur elementary schools experienced phone problems yesterday, and one school continues to have issues. Rann Elementary continues to experience a downed network and telephone services, according to the district. Fiber optic cables connecting the school to the Decatur ISD Central Administration building appears to be the problem. Carson Elementary also had issues yesterday but was back online by yesterday afternoon.
TEACHER OF THE MONTH – Northwest High School teacher Gwen Hilliard was named the KLTY and CareNow Teacher of the Month for December. Representatives from the radio station and CareNow were on hand in her classroom yesterday to present Hilliard with a plaque and several prizes. Hilliard’s students nominated her for the award. She is the second Northwest ISD teacher to be named teacher of the month for the school year, joining Prairie View Elementary teacher Samera Doroodchi who was named teacher of the month last September.
DADDY DAUGHTER DANCE – Pre-registration for the Decatur Junior Woman’s Club Daddy Daughter Dance is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, and Sunday, Jan. 20, at Wal-Mart and online at www.decaturjuniorwomansclub.com or www.decaturciviccenter.com. CHICO CITY COUNCIL – Chico Mayor J. D. Clark will use the first city council meeting of 2013 to push a new set of purchasing policies designed to eliminate wasteful spending and to present a city council code of ethics. The 7 p.m. meeting will be held at Chico City Hall, 400 South Hovey Street.
RAIN EXPECTED – The National Weather Service says isolated thunderstorms are expected in the area today with moderate to heavy rainfall. Rain chances during the day are 70 percent. Tonight, the chance of precipitation increases to 100 percent. Rain and possible thunderstorms are expected to continue into tomorrow.
