DECATUR WRECK – A Dallas man was flown to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth after the grey pickup he was driving collided with a rock hauler around 4 Monday afternoon. Larry Givens, 70, was southbound on U.S. 81/287 just south of Decatur when his pickup crossed a grass median into northbound traffic, striking the rear axles of the trailer and the trailer itself, according to Department of Public Safety officials. Givens sustained head injuries. The driver of the semi was transported to Wise Regional Health System in Decatur with non-lifethreatening injuries.
WISE COUNTY RESIDENTS VISIT LEGISLATORS – More than 40 Wise County elected and appointed officials spent much of Monday at the State Capitol, then visited with a handful of state officials at a meet-and-greet reception Monday evening, kicking off the Monday-Tuesday Wise County Legislative Days in Austin. After a Tuesday morning breakfast at which State Rep. Phil King and State Senator Craig Estes were both due to speak, the group was set to go back to the Capitol for photo opps, committee hearings and more in-depth visits with their representatives. “It’s about putting faces with the names, developing relationships,” said Sabrina Easley, Wise County Oncor representative and one of the sponsors of the event.
NEW SCHOOL’S LEADER NAMED – At the recommendation of Superintendent Karen Rue, the Northwest School Board Monday named Deborah McCune principal of elementary school No. 17. McCune has served as principal of Beck Elementary in Trophy Club since 2000. During the monthly construction report, Dennis McCreary (the district’s assistant superintendent for facilities, planning and construction) said the construction of McCune’s new school “is going well.” “The piers and grade beams are complete, and they’ve begun to pour slab,” McCreary said. “We’ll start to see walls going up by as early as next week. We are happy with the progress.”
RAINY MORNING – Wise County woke up to a rainy morning today, but the rain is expected to end by noon. Overnight rainfall totals as of 7:30 a.m. included 0.5 of an inch in Chico, 0.45 in Alvord, 0.36 in Rhome, 0.2 in Greenwood, 0.15 in Decatur and 0.1 in Bridgeport. Today’s high is expected to top out around 46 degrees.
HEART HEALTH EXPO – The second annual Heart Health Expo is 8-11 a.m. Thursday at the Decatur Civic Center. Several Wise Regional Health System departments will have booths including the cardiac cath lab, Fit-N-Wise, emergency room, cardiac rehab, CPR education, CCU, inpatient rehab, imaging, dietary services and Emergency Medical Services. Screenings will include blood pressure, glucose testing, body fat assessment and heart attack risk assessment. Presentations will be given on how to prevent a heart attack, recognizing the symptoms of a heart attack, heart healthy cooking demonstration, fitness and heart health, life after a heart attack and new technology in heart health. The event will also include CPR demonstrations, how to use an Automated External Defibrillator and discounts for cardiac calcium screenings. CRAFTING CLASSES – The public is invited to Pinterest Pretties free “make it and take it” crafting classes, to be held Thursdays March 7, 14 and 21 at 6 p.m. Participants will learn to make fabric flowers as embellishments for clothing and accessories, to create a swirly flounce scarf, and to learn the basics of making a scrappy quilt. Instruction is free, but supplies will cost $10 per class. The classes will be held at Oak Grove United Methodist Church, 1295 Greenwood Road in Decatur, and are open to any age or experience level.
