CITY MOVES CLOSER TO BUDGET ADOPTION – The Decatur City Council Monday approved on first reading the proposed 2013-2014 city budget, a $14,261,179 spending plan which includes a 4 percent cost-of-living raises for city employees. By keeping a tight rein on hiring and capital expenditures, the new budget requires only a one-cent property tax increase – four-tenths of a cent below the effective rate which would bring in the same amount of revenue as last year. The budget and tax rate will take effect Oct. 1 after one more public hearing. No one attended the initial public hearing Monday.

SLIGHT RAIN CHANCES – It might not be much, but we’ll take any chances of rain we can get in late August in Texas. The National Weather Service says there is a 30 percent chance of storms for the area today with a high of 92.

BACK TO SCHOOL – Remember that school begins today in Alvord and Paradise and the Northwest school district. Keep in mind that beginning Sept. 1, the maximum fine for a first offense of passing a stopped school bus increases from $1,000 to $1,250. The minimum fine will also increase from $200 to $500.

OFFICE CLOSED – Wise Hope Crisis Center will be closed today for staff training. It will reopen at 9 a.m. Wednesday. The 24-hour hotline will be answered at (940) 626-4855. In case of an emergency, call 911.

COOKING CLASS – Texas A&M AgriLife Extension is hosting a Dinner Tonight Cooking School Thursday, Sept. 5, at Weatherford College Wise County. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. so participants can visit exhibits and vendors. Space is still available for vendors. The cooking school begins at 6 p.m. and will include the demonstration of three easy and nutritious menus that can be prepared in 30 minutes or less. Goody bags, cookbooks and door prizes will be given away. Space is limited. Pre-register for $20 by calling 940-627-3341. Cost is $25 at the door.

GOLF TOURNEY – The Decatur Eagles Football Booster Club is seeking sponsors for its Eagle Golf Tourney Oct. 13 at the Runaway Bay Golf Club. Sponsorship levels are $500, $300 and $100. Two food sponsorships will also be available. Raffle donations are also needed. For information call Sean Manuel at (817) 366-8566.

FREE MAMMOGRAMS – The Mary’s Gift program at Wise Regional Health System is offering free mammogram screenings for eligible women Wednesday by appointment only. Call 940-626-1384 to apply.

CHAMBER LUNCH – Decatur Chamber of Commerce luncheon is 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. today at the Decatur Civic Center. Speaker will be Michael Cheves, CEO of Hurricane Group Inc. and published author who will be speaking on Transforming Society through Small Business via Advanced Marketing Technologies.

DECATUR SCHOOL BOARD – A public hearing on the Decatur school district’s proposed budget and tax rate of $1.30 per $100 of taxable value will be held at 5:30 tonight at the DISD administration building, 501 E. Collins. Following the public hearing, the board will vote on approving the budget and tax rate as well as take action on employment of personnel and a year-end budget amendment. Board members will end their evening with a required training session known as “Team of Eight” where the board will set district goals.

FUNERALS – Funeral for Melissa Capps, 36, of Chico is 10 a.m. today at First Baptist Church of Chico with burial at Pleasant Grove Cemetery No. 3. Jones Family Funeral Home in Bridgeport is handling arrangements.

SERVICES for Elton McCurdy, 86, and Brian Mooney, 41, are pending at Coker-Hawkins Funeral Home in Decatur.

SERVICE for Ruby Robertson, 90, of Rhome is pending at Christian-Hawkins Funeral Home in Boyd.

GRAVESIDE service for Cal Karm, 53, of Paradise is 11 a.m. Thursday at Oaklawn Cemetery in Decatur. Family visitation is 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Christian-Hawkins.
