BURNS TO FULFILL JUDGE’S DUTIES FOR NOW – County commissioners have not yet named an interim judge but plan to do so in accordance with Texas Local Government Code. There is no state-mandated deadline or process for filling the post, though, and until that time Precinct 2 Commissioner Kevin Burns will fulfill the judge’s duties. After an interim judge is chosen, that person will serve the remainder of County Judge Bill McElhaney’s term, which runs through December 2014. Commissioners could choose to wait and name an interim after the Dec. 9 filing deadline. The commissioners meeting next Monday will be their first without McElhaney, who died last week.
EARLY VOTING – Yesterday, 58 more people voted early in the Nov. 5 election, bringing the three-day total to 160. Early voting runs 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday through Nov. 1 at three Wise County locations: the Decatur Civic Center, 2010 W. U.S. 380; Rhome City Hall, 105 1st St.; and the Bridgeport Law Enforcement Center, 1000 Thompson St.
RETIREMENT RECEPTION PLANNED – TxDOT Area Engineer Bill Nelson will be honored with a retirement reception from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at the Decatur area office, 1710 W. U.S. 380. Nelson’s retirement at the end of the month will mark the end of a 32-year career in the state’s transportation agency. He has been running the Decatur office since 1999. The public is invited to drop by for refreshments and a visit.
PARADISE RUN – The Paradise Prowl Color 5K Run is Nov. 3 at the Paradise High School baseball fields. The 1-mile fun run/walk is at 2 p.m. and the 5K is at 3. The 5K chip timed race includes seven age categories. Register online at www.onestoprace.com or print off a form at www.pisd.net. Early registration ends Sunday.
FALL PLAY – The Northwest High School theatre department presents “The Trojan Woman” by Eurpides at 7 p.m. today through Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Vernon Solomon Performing Arts Center (2301 Texan Drive, Justin, 76247). Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students.
CHILDREN’S HALLOWEEN PARTY – The Decatur Public Library will host a Children’s Halloween Party 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29. RHOME LIBRARY STORYTIME – Children in kindergarten through fourth grade are invited to fall storytime at the Rhome Public Library 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Kids are invited to wear their costumes and enjoy treats and stories.
CANDY DONATIONS – The nursing homes in Decatur and Bridgeport are accepting donations of candy to hand out to trick-or-treaters on Halloween. Amen X-Press donated plastic pumpkins for the residents to also hand out. All trick-or-treaters are welcome on Halloween.
BAKE SALE – A bake sale for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk honoring Ann Jolley is Friday, 7:30-8:30 a.m. at Rann Elementary in Decatur and at 9 a.m. at North Texas Bank.
THANKSGIVING DINNER – The First United Methodist Church of Bridgeport Thanksgiving dinner is 5 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6. Tickets can be purchased at the church office or from any church member. Cost is $7 for adults and $4 for children ages 5 to 10, if purchased in advance. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children at the door. Kids age 4 and under are free.
BULLS SEND OFF – A Honk Rally/Send Off for the Bridgeport Bulls will be 5 p.m. Friday downtown on Halsell. The buses will head out for Decatur to play in the Battle of Big Sandy football game. Fans are asked to be parked before 5, and bring your signs, shakers and noise makers to show your spirit.
