OFFICES CLOSED FOR MCELHANEY FUNERAL – Most county offices will close today from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. for the memorial service of County Judge Bill McElhaney. Chico City Hall will also close from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. The memorial service is 10:30 a.m. at the Decatur Civic Center. Due to the large crowd expected, carpooling is encouraged.
THINK PINK – Paint the Town Pink is 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday on the Courthouse Square in Decatur. There will be a bake sale, silent auction and a pink-line ceremony. Lunch will be served for $5 a plate. PLANT SALE – The Decatur FFA plant sale is 8 a.m.-noon Saturday at Exxon in Decatur. Fall annuals will be for sale including pansies, mums, snapdragons and bedding plants.
SOCIETY TO HONOR MUSEUM FOUNDERS – The Bridgeport Historical Society will recognize the founders of the Bridgeport Heritage Museum at their lunch meeting at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 21, at Weatherford College Wise County. After lunch, the founders will be introduced and recognized for their contributions. During the program, they will share their thoughts about the museum’s inception.
BENEFIT – A benefit for Nolan Val Kostiha is 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday at Bridgeport High School. It will feature a spaghetti lunch and silent and live auctions. Donations will be accepted for lunch. The 4-month-old child has been diagnosed with a rare, debilitating and terminal disease called Congenital Disorder of Glycosylation. He is the son of Andrea and Joe Kostiha and the grandson of Dan and Debbie Selz.
PANCAKE BREAKFAST – Morris Memorial United Methodist Church of Chico will have a pancake breakfast 7-10 a.m. Saturday. Pancakes, bacon, sausage and all the trimmings will be served for $5. Proceeds will benefit missions of the church, which is located at 302 S. Weatherford St.
HELPING HOOTER – A fundraising event for Heath “Hooter” Boswell is Saturday and Sunday at the Bridgeport Rodeo Arena. Saturday’s main attraction is a team roping. Books open at 9:30 a.m., and the roping will start at noon. Saturday night the celebration continues at Red’s Take 5, 101 Industrial Rd., in Bridgeport 6 p.m.-2 a.m. Organizers have lined up bands for the indoor and outdoor stages. Cost is $10. On Sunday, the events return to the arena with church service 9-11 a.m. Afternoon events include a bull riding at 2 p.m. There will also be mutton bustin’ for the kids, as well as a calf scramble for two age groups: 6 and under and 7 to 12. There will also be a ladies steer scramble for women age 18 and older. The event will also include a variety of kids’ activities including bounce houses, stagecoach rides, dummy roping and clown face painting. Boswell was injured at the Wise County Sheriff’s Posse Rodeo Sept. 7 when a bull stepped on his face.
FUNDRAISER – SpiritHorse International Therapeutic Riding Center in Corinth presents SpiritFest 2013 4-8 p.m. Saturday at 1960 Post Oak Dr. It will feature live entertainment, auction and children’s activities. The event will fund therapeutic horseback riding for individuals with special needs. Food tickets may be purchased for Metzlers Bar-B-Que, The HamburgerMan, or Buffalo Wild Wings.
