WOMAN ESCAPES, LATER ARRESTED – A woman who escaped the custody of a Wise County Sheriff’s deputy Wednesday morning was found and arrested in Decatur between 6 and 6:30 p.m. Wednesday evening. Chandra Jasmine Gooch, 27, was taken into custody by the Wise County Sheriff’s Office about 10:15 Wednesday morning at the Adult Probation Office in Decatur for revocation of probation for possession of a dangerous drug, a Class A misdemeanor. The officer placed Gooch in handcuffs and walked her outside the building to place her in the patrol car. Gooch broke free from the officer and ran. The officer pursued Gooch on foot but was unable to catch her, according to a Sheriff’s Office press release. Decatur Police Department and additional Wise County sheriff’s deputies assisted in the day-long search. In addition to revocation of probation, Gooch now also faces an escape charge.

COMMITTEE TO LOOK AT CEMETERY RULES – In response to signs posted last month at Oaklawn Cemetery in Decatur prohibiting the placement of “decorative items” at grave sites, the city is forming a committee to get input from the public and offer the cemetery board “direction” on how far to go in enforcing the rules. The notice, posted May 17, originally gave people until this Friday to remove the prohibited items or they would be discarded, but the city has put that on hold. STATE BUSINESS HONORS – Two Decatur firms have received “Texas Treasure Business Awards” from the Texas Historical Commission. The award is given to companies in business for 50 years or more. Decatur’s honorees were Holmes Auto Supply and the Wise County Messenger. “I’ve identified more than a dozen firms eligible for the award and I hope they will apply,” said Kerry Clower of the Wise County Historical Commission. “These companies are a significant part of Wise County history, having provided employment for at least 50 years,” said Clower. SAFETY SEAT CHECKUP – Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service-Wise County will host a free child safety seat checkup event 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Monday, June 17 at the Decatur Middle School Parking Lot, 1201 W. Thompson Street. Certified technicians will be on hand to conduct the inspections and offer advice to parents/caregivers to ensure safety and compliance. SUMMER READING KICKOFF – Pre-school and elementary children are invited to attend Chico Public Library’s Summer Reading program kickoff 11 a.m.-noon today. The program will include information about summer reading incentives, upcoming scheduled activities and a craft activity.

SOLD OUT PERFORMANCE – The Wise Performing Arts Guild’s ballet performances of “The Arabian Nights” on Friday and Saturday nights are both sold out.

JUGGLER PERFORMANCE – The Decatur Public Library Summer Reading Club presents juggler David Slick at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 18. The Summer Reading Club is a free program open to children of all ages. Call the library at (940) 393-0290 for more information.

LITTLE LIBRARY – Free Little Library in Boyd is now open outside the Boyd ISD Early Childhood Building (behind Allsups). It’s open to the public, and the books are free. You can take one and leave one at any time. The community project is organized by Texas Neighborhood Services-Head Start Boyd to promote school readiness for children under 5.

MULTI-CHAMBER MIXER – James Wood Motors in Decatur will host a mixer for area Chambers of Commerce 5-8 tonight. The dealership will unveil the redesigned 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups. Radio personality Terry Dorsey will broadcast from 6-8, and The New Immigrants will perform from 6-7.
