SHERMAN FOUND GUILTY OF INDECENCY WITH A CHILD – After deliberating for just more than two hours Wednesday afternoon, a Wise County jury found Richard Lee Sherman, 37, guilty of indecency with a child sexual contact, a second degree felony. The jury returned the verdict at 4:45 p.m. The punishment phase of the trial will begin this morning in 271st District Court. Sherman faces a sentence of 2 to 20 years in jail. Because the victim in the case was under 14 at the time of the offense, Sherman will not be eligible for probation. The jury did not return a guilty verdict on continuous sexual abuse of a child under 14, which would have carried a sentence of 25 years to life in prison. The offense happened two years ago at Sherman’s home in Rhome. The victim was his 11-year-old daughter, who did testify during the trial.
