SCHOOL IS (MOSTLY) BACK – Many school districts in Wise County are returning to classes today, but due to lingering ice, some buses may not run. Alvord ISD will remain closed today. Boyd, Northwest and Paradise schools will open at regular time. Bridgeport ISD starts at 10 a.m. with limited bus routes. Routes 4, 5, 6 and 9 won’t run at all. Travel on routes 2, 3 and 11 will be limited. Chico ISD will open at regular time, but buses will not run. Decatur ISD starts at 10 a.m. All buses will run, but if a road is unsafe, it will not travel that road. Slidell ISD will open one hour late, and buses will run one hour late.
SHOPPING FRENZY – Holiday Shopping Frenzy sponsored by the Bridgeport Area Chamber of Commerce is today through Saturday. There will be two $500 cash and two $50 Brookshire’s gift card giveaways. Participants will be entered for visiting and for every $20 spent at any participating business – C&O Communications/AT&T, Maria’s Gift and Flower Shoppe, Aaron’s Sales and Leasing, The Hope Chest, Terra Cotta Boutique, Bright Ideas Lighting and More, Ink ‘N’ Stitch, Valu-Rite Pharmacy, Mas Meat and Produce Market, Ken’s Appliance Lawn and Garden, Gail’s Pharmacy and Gifts, All Wise Garden Center and Landscaping, Skin and Body Works Spa, It’s Personal, Brownie Points Cupcakes and Sweetness, Premier Jewelry by Carla McCain, Bridgeport Guns and Ammo and Skeeter Bugs. The drawing will be held 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Bridgeport Stage, 1009 Halsell St. Participants do not have to be present to win.
DONATIONS SOUGHT – Wise Foundation is seeking help collecting donations to carry on their next mission trip to the northern border of Mexico. Items needed by Dec. 18 include 1-pound bags of rice, 1-pound bags of pinto beans, 1-pound bags of sugar, 1-pound bags of salt, 16-ounce cornflake boxes, cooking oil, 12-ounce tuna cans, 18.5-ounce Progresso soup cans and canned vegetables. QUILT GUILD PARTY – The Wise County Quilt Guild invites past, present and future members to their Christmas party, 11 a.m. Saturday at Cates Street Church of Christ fellowship hall at 1406 Cates St. in Bridgeport. BASKETBALL EVENT – Alvord Basketball Hoopla is 6 tonight in the Alvord High School cafeteria. Chili/hot dogs, drinks and dessert will be served for $5. Baked goods will be auctioned. The Lady Bulldogs and Bulldog basketball teams as well as the little dribblers will be introduced at 6:30.
SANTA VISITS RHOME – Santa will make a visit 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, at Rhome Community Center located at 261 School Road. Hot chocolate, punch and cookies will be served. There will also be a free raffle, door prizes and a reading of Christmas stories.
LUNCH WITH SANTA – A hot dog lunch with Santa is noon Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Boyd.
BREAKFAST WITH SANTA – Yesterday’s Texas in Bridgeport will host Breakfast with Santa 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday. Cost is $7 for kids, which includes a photo with Santa, and $5 for adults. Proceeds benefit Toys For Tots. The restaurant is a Toys For Tots drop-off location.
PHOTOS WITH SANTA – Santa will be available for photos 4-6 p.m. Friday at First Financial Bank in Bridgeport.
DECATUR PARADE OF LIGHTS – Decatur’s Parade of Lights has been rescheduled for 6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20. Line up will begin at 5 p.m. behind Eagle Stadium.
SANTA VISIT – The Decatur Public Library will host Pictures with Santa 3:30-5:30 p.m. today. Participants can take a photo with Santa and then stay for a craft and milk and cookies. There is no charge for this event, but you do need to bring your own camera. Call the library at 940-393-0290 for more information.
SANTA COPS – The Decatur Police Department is needing monetary donations or new, unwrapped toys for their Santa Cops program. They can be dropped off at the police department through Monday, Dec.16. For more information, call Ashly DoByns at 940-393-0300.
HOLIDAY TIGER TICKETS – Center for Animal Research and Education in Bridgeport is giving away two round-trip tickets on Southwest Airlines to anywhere in the contiguous United States in a holiday raffle. Entrants receive one ticket for each donation of $10. There is no limit to the amount of times one can register. Donations can be made through a CARE representative via PayPal or in person at CARE. All donations go to care and maintenance of the animals at CARE. Drawing is scheduled for Dec. 15. Got to www.carerescuetexas.com for more information.
FUNERALS – Graveside service for Jack E. Tate, 75, of Paradise is 1 p.m. Saturday at Crafton Cemetery. Family visitation is 6-8 p.m. Friday at Jones Family Funeral Home in Bridgeport.
GRAVESIDE service for Clayton Jayden Palmer, the infant son of Hunter and Emily Palmer, is 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Eternal Oaks Cemetery in Runaway Bay. Hawkins Funeral Home in Bridgeport is handling arrangements.
MEMORIAL service for Lena Pearl Elliott, 94, of Seattle, Wash., formerly of Bridgeport, is 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 16, at Hawkins Funeral Home Chapel.
SERVICE for Betty E. McAfee, 82, formerly of Bridgeport is 1 p.m. Saturday at Oak Crest Baptist Church in Midlothian with burial at East Bridgeport Cemetery in Bridgeport. Family visitation is 6-8 p.m. Friday at the church. Hawkins-Bridgeport is handling arrangements.
MEMORIAL service for Edward “Eddie” Earl Bailey Sr., 76, of Boyd is 1 p.m. Saturday at Christian-Hawkins Funeral Home in Boyd. Family visitation is noon-1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
