DEATH RULED ACCIDENTAL – The Dallas County Medical Examiners Office has ruled the death of a Chico man killed in an explosion at Bridgeport Tank Trucks last month as accidental. The report says an autopsy was performed on Jose Jesus Landeros, 50, following his death on July 24 while working on a tank trailer at his place of employment. The cause of death was ruled “blunt force and thermal injuries.” The exact task that Landeros was performing at the time of the explosion has not been revealed, pending an investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

COUNTY BUDGET INCLUDES RAISES – County commissioners preliminarily approved a $65 million budget for fiscal year 2014 at the end of a long workshop Tuesday. The new budget includes raises for elected officials with the largest increases going to County Court-at-Law No. 2 Judge Stephen Wren, County Attorney James Stainton and Tax Assessor/Collector Monte Shaw. Wren will receive an additional $10,700 thanks in part to new legislation mandating that county court-at-law judges be paid within a certain amount of the district judge. County Court-at-Law Judge Melton Cude will get a $6,600 raise as a result of this legislation. Stainton will receive an increase of $8,250, $3,750 of which will be paid by the state, and Shaw is slated to receive an additional $8,600. The budget also includes a 3 percent increase in wages for every department. That money will be distributed to department heads to allocate to employees as they see fit. Commissioners also discussed several budget requests with department heads Tuesday, but most of those were denied or significantly cut. The budget, funded by last year’s rate of 37.89 cents per $100 property valuation, will likely be adopted in a special meeting Tuesday, Aug. 20. Read more in the weekend Messenger.
