REGIONAL TEACHER OF THE YEAR – Lou Hitt, a kindergarten teacher at Rann Elementary in Decatur, was named the 2013 Region XI Elementary Teacher of the Year at a ceremony Tuesday night in Hurst. Hitt has taught in the Decatur school district for 32 years and was named the district’s elementary teacher of the year in June. Hitt was selected from the Region XI Service Center area which includes 77 public school districts and 35 charter schools. This marks the second year in a row a Decatur teacher has won the regional honor and advanced to the statewide competition, which will be held later this year.

SPRAYING FOR MOSQUITOES – The City of Decatur will conduct ground spraying for mosquitoes tonight. The spraying will begin at 8 p.m. Target areas include: U.S. 81/287 Business North from West Walnut to the 1600 block; Shady Lane; Valley Ridge Court neighborhood; Kings Terrace; Greathouse Village; South Martins Branch and Briar Crossing. The pesticide being used to spray is Masterline Kontrol 4-4. Residents are encouraged to stay indoors during spraying. Call the city at (940) 393.0260 for more information.

HOW TO HELP – The home involved in a fire in Decatur Tuesday night was deemed uninhabitable, and its contents were a total loss, leaving the family who lived in it with very little. Although Red Cross has put the five occupants up in a hotel through Friday, they said they have no place else to go thereafter. “We need a place to live, clothes – we lost everything,” said Jennifer Albritton, who lived in the home with her husband, Marshal; their two sons and her mother. Jennifer wears a size 3 in bottoms and medium in shirts. Marshal uses 38×30 pants and extra-large or XXL shirts. Their 11-year-old son wears a size 8 pants/shorts and medium shirts while their 15-year-old son wears size 29 jeans and large shirts. Jennifer’s mother wears a size 7 regular in pants and medium shirts. Contact the family at (940) 255-2846.

TALKING ABOUT TAX RATES – Wise County commissioners meet 9 a.m. today to propose the county tax rate and the rate for the Weatherford College Wise County branch maintenance tax. The meeting is open to the public and will be held in the third-floor conference room of the courthouse in Decatur.

ALZHEIMER’S SUPPORT – The monthly support group for those caring for someone with Alzheimer’s or related dementia is 7 tonight in the board room at the west campus of Wise Regional Health System in Decatur. For more information, call Angie at (940) 627-6888.

PICKIN’ PARTY – 1st Thursday Jam at the Bridgeport Stage is 7-9 tonight. The evening of live acoustic entertainment by area musicians is free. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

POSSE MEETING – The 2013 Wise County Sheriff’s Posse Rodeo Queens/Sweetheart/Little Miss meeting is 6 tonight at the Quonset Hut at the Posse Grounds. This is the last day to sign up. Participants must attend and bring coggins documentation with them.

PLAY GROUP – Wise Moms is meeting 10 a.m. tomorrow on the beach at Wise County Park so the kids can play in the water and sand.

BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT – Sissies Elite Basketball will hold a Back to School 3-on-3 Basketball Bash Friday, Aug. 9 at Bridgeport Middle School. Cost is $100 per team for ages 10 and up. TALENT SHOW - Registration for the Wise Country Fall Out will be accepted through Friday at the Wise County Heritage Museum, 1602 S. Trinity St. in Decatur. This talent show contest awards cash payouts to the top three performers as selected by a panel of judges. The show is scheduled for a Saturday night in November with auditions on two Saturdays in August. Twelve participants are needed to produce the show. BRIDGEPORT COUNCIL - The Bridgeport City Council called a special meeting for 6:30 tonight to accept the resignation of Councilmember Kevin Lopez. Lopez, who cited family reasons, was elected to the council in May. During the meeting, city officials are also to discuss nominations and appoint a replacement. The meeting is at City Hall.

CHICO SCHOOL BOARD – Chico school trustees will examine projected revenue estimates and discuss a draft budget for 2013-2014 at today’s meeting. The board is also expected to determine a proposed tax rate and set a date for a public hearing for the budget and tax rate. The meeting is at 3:30 p.m. in Room 150 at Chico Elementary School, 1120 Park Road.

CAR WASH FUNDRAISER — The Bridgeport Volleyball Booster Club will hold its annual car wash fundraiser 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at the Neighborhood Auto (James Wood) parking lot in Bridgeport. Donations will be accepted and concessions will be available.

DIG INTO READING — Chilren are invited to the Chico Public Library  11 a.m.-noon today to attend the last Dig Into Reading summer program. It will include refreshments, and prizes will be awarded for top readers. Kids should bring their reading logs.

FUNERALS – Service for Tony Wayne Gayler, 57, of Decatur is 10 a.m. Friday at the Church of Christ in Alvord with burial at Perryman Cemetery. Family visitation is 6-8 tonight at Coker-Hawkins Funeral Home in Decatur.

SERVICE for Jackie Waggoner, 81, of Boyd is pending at Christian-Hawkins Funeral Home in Boyd.
